HEAD VISOR Acoustic Cameras – Microphone arrays for localizing sound sources using beamforming technology

Enquiry Item

The HEAD VISOR acoustic camera measurement system comprises the software and a microphone array. The system uses beamforming technology to pinpoint sound sources in real time. Various microphone arrays are available for different applications. Some are scalable and customizable; all can be activated and controlled with HEAD VISOR software.

When the microphone array is switched on, HEAD VISOR software provides video images with simultaneously overlaid, high-quality acoustic source mapping. This feature lets you quickly obtain the necessary information about the sound sources without delay - identify their location, sound pressure level, and spectrum.

All three hardware versions combine beamforming with MultipleEye technology, using multiple cameras to record the video images in real-time. This process enables distances to all points in the image to be determined with exceptional precision and allows continuous, synchronous video images in real time.

The following HEAD VISOR microphone arrays are available for the acoustic camera:

HEAD VISOR VMA V: Lightweight, mobile, hand-held, and extendable microphone array with an integrated display and controls for the most flexible applications and results showing directly on the device (0.3 m/1.0 m diameter)
HEAD VISOR VMA III.0: Lightweight microphone array for stationary applications (for example in wind tunnels; 3.0 m diameter)
HEAD VISOR flex: Modular microphone array for sound source localization over large distances or at low frequencies (arbitrary dimensions)

How it works

VMA-V-Base-Plate-acoustics

As the name suggests, an acoustic camera incorporates a camera – or several cameras – to record a visual image of the object under investigation. For the acoustics part, it also incorporates several microphones that form a specific pattern, the so-called microphone array. When a user directs the acoustic camera toward an object, they receive both the visual image and an acoustic recording of said object. This is where the software comes into play: simply speaking, it computes the time differences between the microphone signals, generates an acoustic map of the sound, and superimposes it over the visual image. This way, it is possible to see precisely where the noise originates.

Versatility is key

csm-IMG-04-VMA-V-Measurement

How good acoustic cameras are – how easy they are to use, how convenient they are to operate, and how fast and precise they render the results – depends on many factors. That’s why, with our host of experience in creating acoustic cameras, we can present the probably best overall package of so-called beamforming hardware and the appropriate software available on the market today, with a unique set of features: The VMA V acoustic camera is extremely versatile and delivers excellent results in all areas. And thanks to its flexibility, you can configure VMA V ideally for every application.

Perfectly harmonized hard- and software

With the new HEAD VISOR VMA V, we have created lightweight hardware that can easily be held in the hands over a longer period without fatigue – of course, you can also use a camera stand. The VMA V is intuitive and efficient to operate, with a 7” multi-touch display and four control buttons enabling instant and highly precise results. You can use the 30-cm-body with its depth camera and 60 microphones for close-up applications, for example, in a car interior, and extend it with ten spiral arms, adding another 60 microphones and creating an array with a diameter of 100 centimeters. With this array, you can make sounds visible up to a lower limit frequency of 250Hz. Our HEAD VISOR 6 Software delivers the perfect algorithms and user interface for beamforming and acoustic camera applications.

Licensing: Tailored to your needs

csm_IMG_03_VISOR_Software_Splash_screen__c_HEADacoustics_cfa390c373

You can select between four license models that give you all the opportunities and freedom to do exactly what you need and want – not more, and not less. Take, for example, the HEAD VISOR Snap license: Using the so-called freeze buffer, you can take a snapshot of your object under investigation and export it instantly, for example, to show your conclusive results to your project manager without the need for further processing. Without taking a recording and carrying out a time-consuming analysis, you immediately have a result that even non-acousticians understand.

VARIANTS

HEAD VISOR VMA V

Fast, intuitive, for professional requirements. The hand-held, battery-powered, light HEAD VISOR VMA V body has 60/120 microphones across a diameter of 0.3 m/1.0 m. An integrated 7” multi-touch display, control buttons, and a depth camera guarantee an intuitive and efficient operation. Distances between the microphone array and sound source can can vary from 30 cm to 200 m, with dynamics up to 40 dB in a 250 Hz–20 kHz range.

HEAD VISOR Probe

The near-field HEAD VISOR Probe helps with investigating stationary sounds at frequencies below 600 Hz and acts as a supplement to the microphone arrays. Sound is detected directionally via two microphones at the tip of the probe. MultipleEye technology determines the current position of the probe in real time. The probe therefore allows specific sub-areas to be calibrated. The near-field HEAD VISOR Probe can be connected to the array, which allows a frequency range of 20 Hz–20 kHz to be evaluated.

HEAD VISOR VMA III.0

The HEAD VISOR VMA III.0 array, with 112 microphones and a diameter of 3 m, is suitable for installation on a wall or ceiling, which means it can be used in, e.g., wind tunnels. The 14 arms allow dynamics of 10 dB (standard beamforming) or up to 30 dB (advanced algorithms) in a frequency range of 200 Hz–20 kHz.
